I recently drove past Jones Beach and was reminded of my last adventure there this past summer. This day was one of the most romantic dates of my life and very close to life changing later. Here's a kick off of how the night began...
Pensyl and I had just sat down and caught one of Modest Mouse' songs and moments later found ourselves SATURATED by rain, drops so heavy our umbrella began to cave in on us. Lighting hit the venue and its sound was so INTENSE. Dan said he felt like lightening grazed his head. The band suddenly stopped playing but the drummer kept rockin' it out! It was definitely a moment. This was the announcement they made after the fact. They later confirmed lightening had struck the venue.

All Points West to Be Radiohead's Only NYC Appearance
All Points West to Be Radiohead's Only NYC Appearance
New Yorkers hoping to brag to future generations that they saw Radiohead on the In Rainbows tour at Madison Square Garden are shit outta luck. Looks like your only chance to see Radiohead on this tour will be at the All Points West Music and Arts Festival, as no other New York area appearances are planned. (Except for the private show they're going to play at Cake Shop just for me and my friends. Right, guys? Right??)
Not that there's anything to complain about. As you know, All Points West is taking place August 8-10 at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, and Radiohead will headline both Friday and Saturday nights (Jack Johnson headlines Sunday). Other acts slated to perform include Animal Collective, Cat Power, the New Pornographers, Girl Talk, the Roots, Underworld, the Go! Team, Metric, CSS, Andrew Bird, Black Kids, Chromeo, Amadou & Mariam, Rogue Wave, and Mates of State. It's shaping up to be a pretty cool time.
Pitchfork spoke to festival organizer Paul Tollett of Goldenvoice, who filled us in on some of the logistics of All Points West. Although Goldenvoice is the company behind Coachella, Tollett stresses that APW is not Coachella East. For starters, it's a lot smaller. Tollett estimates that the festival's capacity will be "about half" of that of American behemoths like Coachella, Bonnaroo, and Lollapalooza, meaning that they will cap attendance at around 30 or 40 thousand people.
There will only be three stages and about 40 bands, as opposed to the 100+ that swarm Coachella. This will allow bands to play longer sets than usual, thus letting everyone who doesn't want to see Jack Johnson leave super early on Sunday night and get a good night's sleep for work the next day.
But the biggest difference between Coachella and APW has to do with location. Coachella takes place on a polo field in the middle of the desert. It's beautiful and all, but it's very, very difficult to get to the festival without a car. (That will be changing this year, Tollett says, as they are partnering with Amtrak to set up a special stop for the festival.) APW, on the other hand, is in an urban park that's just a brief train or ferry ride away from Manhattan. That means less driving... plus getting to watch bands play against the backdrop of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Manhattan skyline.
Hmm... a three-day music festival that's relatively small, features three stages, is located in an urban park with a beautiful skyline backdrop easily accessible by public transportation, and features performances by Cat Power, the New Pornographers, CSS, and Girl Talk? What a great idea!
Since we had Tollett on the phone, we had to ask, even though we knew it was a stupid question: Any chance that one of the promised additions to the All Points West lineup might be My Bloody Valentine?
No. No chance at all.

Radiohead to Play All Points West Festival - TWICE!
Looks like those rumors about Radiohead playing the inaugural edition of the All Points West Music & Arts Festival were true, as reported by URB Magazine and subsequently confirmed. All Points West, produced by AEG Live and Goldenvoice (aka the people behind Coachella), takes place August 8-10 in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. Radiohead will headline the first two nights, August 8 and 9.
More North American tour dates should be announced soon; they will probably be in July and early August, per the big gaping hole in Radiohead's touring schedule right now. According to Radiohead authority At Ease Web, Japanese and South American tours should pop up in the fall.

The J.A.M. Awards are unique, as they are the first awards in the hip-hop community to recognize social responsibility. The awards will honor the late Jam Master Jay's life and legacy and his efforts to promote social Justice, Arts, and Music ("J.A.M.") in his local community and around the world. The event, hosted by Jay's wife Terri Corley-Mizell and DMC. Every year an honoree from the world of hip hop will be selected from the fields of social Justice, one from the Arts and one from Music. They will be selected based on their record of helping others.

Paper Magazine Nightlife Awards
Paper Mag Nightlife Awards
For the third year in a row, a who's who of the freaks that make up the New York nightlife world came out to drink, be merry and get up to no good at PAPER Magazine's Nightlife Awards, presented by DIESEL.com, and held this year at the lovely and disco-ball-heavy Spotlight Studios in Times Square. Perez Hilton hosted; Lady Bunny DJ-ed; Q-Tip performed; Dos Equis and Svedka kindly provided the bevvies; shenanigans ensued. Highlights included:
Jackson Pollis, the (is he legal yet?) "fourth" Misshape filling in for absentee presenters Benjamin Cho and Moby. "You may know me from my Grammy-winning album Play featuring Gwen Stefani," he deadpanned.
Village Voice columnist Michael Musto, gay porn bad-boy Michael Lucas and PAPER's Mickey Boardman super-bantering during the People's Choice Awards segment of the evening, which devolved into a discussion of who on stage was a "bottom" and Michael Lucas bearing his six-pack.
Perez Hilton karaoke-ing to "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"
Seeing the issue of PAPER on a jumbo screen outside of Spotlight Studios shining onto Times Square. We were kind of tearing up!
Perez Hilton making models Coco Rocha and Behati Prinsloo (whose name he didn't even pretend to be able to pronounce) walk the runway (i.e. the stage) and telling them if they wanted to make it onto his blog, they best make out. They didn't, alas. But still made it onto his blog.
Sally Singer and Andre J making a perfectly absurd and wonderful presenting duo!
The identically-dressed Six Six Sick girls winning the award for Best Party and Jordan Silver (whose party Circus 68 did not win) going up and throwing the microphone onto the stage.
Presenters Luigi Tadini and Kate Schelter -- they're just really, really cute.
Lady Bunny and (a disrobed) Andre J having what appeared to be a dance-off following the awards and preceding Q-Tip.
Q-Tip, Q-Tip and more Q-Tip! He played a medium-length, quite amazing set, featuring new stuff and old chestnuts like Electric Relaxation (from his Tribe days), "Breathe and Stop" and "Vivrant Thing." Clad in sweatpants and a long-sleeved T-shirt, Q-Tip tore the house down. His new album, The Renaissance is out Dec. 18.

Underworld Concert and beautiful fall evening ....
Was able to snag my roomate's extra ticket to the Underworld concert at Rumsley Playfield. (Thanks Stacy!!) I knew I was in for a fun night the moment I stepped into Central Park ...

After some drinks at Carlos' we decided to break out for some food at la esquina. Somehow we found ourselves catching a ride in a limo since it was the ONLY vehicle that could fit a dog of his size .....
Here's Carlos and Alex ... they were stoked we got a ride!!

We rolled around the city and kicked back listening to frank sinatra's "New York New York" and some other classics. Was one of the first beautiful fall nights .. so random but pretty amazing nonetheless. Stopped off a La Esquina for some bites, picked up our crew and resumed our ride ..
Our limo driver had a son that dj's in the ATL .. some bumpin' z-trip hip hop style sh*t... suddenly dude was driving and kickn a tamborine to the beatz .. so random but kind of impressive ...best $20 I ever spent ;-)
